John Henry and the Baltimores of Troy

Greenwich, New York photographer and historian, Clifford Oliver Mealy, will present a program on the John Henry and Baltimore families. John Henry came north after the Civil War and married into one of the most influential black families north of New York City.

Freedom seeker, blacksmith, husband, and father; John Henry married Emma Baltimore in May of 1867. Luckily, Emma kept a family album. This program offers a view of what life was like for African Americans in our local region during the late 19th century.

Saratoga Arts made this program possible with a Community Arts Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

This digital gallery of the 19th century photographs of the Henry family who lived in Whitehall, New York were re-discovered a few years ago at the Whitehall Library when Clifford was alerted to their existence. The photos tell the story of the Henry family who were related by marriage to the prominent abolitionist Baltimore family of Troy, NY.

All photographs seen here are from an album donated to the Whitehall Historical Society by Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Brassaw in 1957. It is now kept at the Whitehall Library.
